About the USGBC and LEED

The USGBC is dedicated to expanding sustainable building practices and education.  Green buildings benefit the environment and the economy and they improve health and community welfare.  The USGBC is committed to a prosperous and sustainable future for our nation through cost efficient and energy saving green buildings.

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System was developed by the USGBC to certify sustainable buildings.  LEED addresses all building types and emphasizes state of the art strategies in five areas:  sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials and resources selection and indoor environmental quality.

LEED Accredited Professionals (LEED AP) have demonstrated a thorough understanding of green building techniques, the LEED Rating System, and the certification process.  They achieved this accreditation by successfully passing a comprehensive examination administered by the Green Building Certification Institute, GBCI.

The GBCI, sanctioned by the USGBC, administers LEED project certification and manages the professional credentialing program for LEED Rating Systems.
